SENSITIVITY

Cultural Sensitivity in visual storytelling refers to the awareness, respect and consideration given to the diverse cultural backgrounds, values, norms and experiences of the individuals or communities portrayed in the story.

It involves accurately representing and depicting cultural elements, traditions, customs and identities in a way that is authentic, respectful and meaningful to the depicted culture.

  • Avoids stereotypes

  • Builds authenticity

REPRESENTATION

Authentic Representation

Diversity ensures that a range of voices and experiences are represented in the storytelling process. In VFX production, this authenticity is crucial for creating believable and relatable characters, settings and visual effects that resonate with diverse audiences. Authentic representation enhances the overall quality and impact of the final product

Example:

  • Madame CJ Walker

  • A Man Called Otto

  • Black Panther

  • Queen & Sim

A Man Called Otto

Director - Marc Forster

In the film A Man Called Otto one of his best friends Rueben, portrayed by actor Peter Lawson Jones is an Afro American who meets Otto in the 1980s.

To portray and depict this character authentically a cultural understanding and sensitivity to an Afro American family in the 1980s was very crucial. This involved creatives from set dressing, wardrobe, vfx and other departments to be in constant communication and understanding of what that culture was. The result of those efforts ultimately helped portray a truthful and authentic representation of the character Rueben for that time period.
